Cathay Updates!

Hey everyone, sorry I've been a bit behind on some updates from the past week. My army of the Grand Cathay continues with this latest edition of the Great Cannon. Further plucking along with my army with this fantastic artillery piece, and honestly, a more relaxing paint job compared to my Shugengan Lord. I've been getting better this past year at relaxing my painting efforts when it comes to tabletop pieces. Giving more focused efforts on a few key hero elements that stand out, while relaxing on some finer details, so that I'm not spending ages with every little trinket on the model, or focused on the perfect set of eyes on every single model. A simple detail that I'll be leaving out rather than placing it in is that with infantry after the 2nd rank, is to skip out on the eye details and do a much simpler face. Because honestly, it's very difficult to see, and time can be spent on other, stronger details, such as my army's wide use of red and black cloth. Even with this piece, you may notice that I've relaxed on the details with just the main focused elements standing out, along with a bit more love on the Ogre and the Old Man.

Also relaxed is the use of metallics. While not my favourite paint to use, I think it's fine, and for sanity purposes, for the tabletop, it looks great. Using Scale75 Decayed Metal as a base, then layering Gold from the Vallejo metal series for the gold. Giving 2 washes with a Burnt Umber Oil wash first, and then following with a contrast wash of Darkoath Flesh diluted with contrast medium from Citadel to give a reddish tint. Finally, with a light drybrush of Gold mixed with a bit of silver for those final highlights. The cast iron cannon is just Scale75 Black metal, followed by a drybrush of heavy metal with a Burnt umber wash and a final highlight of Vallejo metal colour steel. Nothing fancy, just keep it simple and have a solid piece for the tabletop.

Of course, you will see more of the Ogre Gunner very shortly, as he is our subject for the first Skin Challenge! So we will be zooming in on him more in-depth in the next few days. Alright, it's back to the editing desk I go, and I will have more updates coming this week! Happy Painting :)
