Beginnings of the Grand Cathay
It's finally here, and I'm excited to be a part of the new release of The Grand Cathay, a brand new army faction from Games Workshop set in the Old World of Warhammer Fantasy! These models are simply fantastic, full of ancient Chinese-inspired culture from their faces, clothes, weapons, symbols and language. I'm very happy for GW to be moving their inspiration and representation further east and opening up more of the Old World with nations only mentioned in brief from the old lore, and in small thanks to the Total War video game franchises for showing us the first real images of Cathay back in 2022.
The first unit shown of the Jade Warriors was inspired primarily through the popular and considered "lucky" colours of red and yellow. I wanted all the clothes of the state troops to be in red, and framed in contrast with black leather. The desaturated gold would be featured on the few decorative trims of the shoulder pauldrons and was kept desaturated to avoid clashing with the Golden Yellow of the banner. The banner and the Chinese symbol itself are very important to me also, reading as my mother's family name "Jung". As to my ethnicity, I am half Chinese and being second-generation Chinese-Canadian. With my family's lineage on record spanning back over 100 generations!
There's much more I'll be covering over the next several months with the Grand Cathay, such as characters, constructs and freehand painting tutorials!
