Target Aquired
I'm happy to present my take on the limited Warhammer+ release of the Vindicare Assassin that was painted for a private collector. Besides providing a wonderful piece to begin with, we both felt that the metal stilts on which the whole piece stood were quite lacklustre. The image we needed was from a much higher vantage point, but we still needed to keep it within the challenges to make it presentable on the tabletop. The city ruins columns provided a perfect solution, which provides the height to give that feeling of a vantage point above the battlefield below.
The paintwork itself was an exercise to make the character the main subject, but also not to make him stick out like a sore thumb. He is a sniper after all, and I didn't want to give him any added colour, nor anything overly reflective/glowing, such as shiny metals or emitting light. Rather, I would use the surrounding elements of the arch and the cutout cavity to increase the size of the light overall to help pull the vignette towards him. With a final touch of a coloured magenta light coming from outside the scene to give him a bit of drama and a sense of some city neon lights from neighbouring rooftops.
This piece was really fun to create and offered a new challenge in painting a predominantly black scheme. You may be happy to know that this piece has been under the camera lens, and will have a follow-up tutorial coming later in October! A shout-out to my sponsors at Ionic Smartcolours by MiG Ammo, as well as my friends at Fenris Games, for supplying me with the brand-new basing compounds from Krautcover Scenics. I'll have more on the scenic products with a full review coming soon to YouTube.
