Azrael, Chapter Master of the Dark Angels
Ok so he may or may not be the chapter master since the Lion is back, and his helm might not be his anymore to tote it around. Who knows 🤙. But all I know he makes for one wicked miniature, and it represents a solid recreation of the classic sculpt with a fresh n modern take. I was particularly surprised at painting the banner, and simply how much I like the classic design as well as the overall structure of how it’s mounted. The back banner creates a lovely backsplash and extends the silhouette of the marine to make him even more grand. I’ve never been one to rush to paint a sculpted banner, but again it surprised me to enjoy the experience.
I’ve painted this for a private collectors commission piece, and with the numerous Dark Angels tutorials along with the Armageddon release, I’ve kept this process either on stream or simply off camera. For those who want the colour palette, and employ techniques of painting marine armour, let’s say from the recent Blood Angels Armageddon series. You can create this version of Dark Angels armour wirh these below.
Dark Marine Green (ionic)
Light Olive Green (ionic)
Warm Yellow (Kimera)
Mahogony & Violet Inks (Ionic & scale75)
Burnt Umber (scale75)
Simply mix dark marine green and burnt umber into a round 50/50 to create your shadows. Dark marine green on its own is your midtone (a slightly lighter version of GW matched Dark Angels Green). Continue to add Light Olive into Dark Marine Green to build your light volume. When approaching the highlight, mix in a pinch of warm yellow and a bit of white to create those warmer highlights at the end. Your inks are there to line into the darkest shadows and lining (occlusion shadows).
Through the process I had several requests about the robes of Azrael. So when it came time to painting the watcher in the dark, I put him under the camera lens and filmed that process. So coming in the next couple of weeks, I’ll have a segment tutorial on exactly that :)
