Acquiring a new target

This week has seen a few new projects including this Vindicare Assassin commission, which again covers more black! Working with a mini diorama more than a single subject vignette, it’s been a bit trickier to balance the values and keep focus on the shooter, but still give him a sense of melting into the shadows. Besides a change in light temperature on angles, I’ve also threaded in a magenta rim light for a small bit of added flair. I’m not married to the colour and I may change it later, but the concept is there and I find it helps to give a bit of interest and add to the ambience of the scene. I can imagine some city lights or even a strong artificial light of a billboard or sign that’s close by filling this area. I’ve had this one under the camera, and I think this subject will be good to cover lighting dark scenes, working with light balance and splashes of local colour to frame subjects.

Next week we will see the second video of the Skin Challenge as we venture forth into a focus of mixing tones, working loosely with larger strokes, glazing variations, and muscle groupings of the arm and chest. I hope you all are finding the start of the challenge exciting and in anticipation of more things to come. If you’re looking for recommendations on miniature subjects to practice on skin, please feel free to ask me in the comments below or shoot me a msg on Discord. There’s many I can recommend in a variety of scales, and with those awaiting some more GW miniatures with lots of skin. The Slannesh range from Age of Sigmar is an excellent choice, and will be a subject for a future part in this series!

Have a great weekend and Happy Painting ✌️
